The same factors that will support school improvement create barriers that will need to be overcome. Most students consistently achieve high levels of learning; all students need to achieve high levels of learning. In order to maximize outcomes, all staff will need to adopt a belief system that all students cana nd will learn at high levels. Underrepresented subgroups will need to receive enhanced support and a comprehensive safety net will need to be developed. A culture of data analysis, diagnostic/prescriptive instruction, and student-centered instructional strategies will need to be deeply embedded in order to meet the needs of all students. It will be a challenge to spread a sense of urgency about outcomes for some when outcomes for most are already very good.

These are some simple and helpful reminders and resources to assist in planning for each and every session. While these meetings will certainly be helpful in improving the operational efficiencies of the district, they are also opportunities for professional development. As such, please review the following as you plan and prepare:

Clarify the purpose and outcomes. Spend time communicating the purpose and intended outcomes at the beginning of each session.
Be mindful that we serve a diverse group of students. Have you considered how to approach your topic differently from the lens of English Learners, Special Education students, and the Gifted and Talented?

Think about assessment and evaluation on the front end of each initiative. Plan to populate Data Director with any and all student achievement information that will help us to make progress.

Ask for feedback from your group to help guide ongoing improvements. You can use a simple online survey posted on the CUSD Professional Development Blog periodically to simplify the feedback process. Let Devin know when you want to access results.

Aviara Oaks Elementary Teachers Learn Power Point

Last week the Aviara Oaks Elementary teaching staff came together to work with their new instructional technology specialist, Jami Rushing, and learn how to incorporate Power Point presentations into their teaching. Feedback from the training has been positive and it indicates the vast potential of site-based, meaningful professional learning opportunities. Hats off to the AOE team, to Jami, and to the leadership for promoting these efforts!

Professional Learning Communities Engage in Professional Development

It has been an exciting beginning to the 2008-2009 school year. Friday, August 22nd was our first day of professional development across the district and we saw wonderful teamwork and collaboration. Elementary grade level teams and secondary departments worked on PLC foundations such as vision, mission, values and goals. Team norms were reviewed/revised/established. SMART Goals for the new year were developed. New instructional materials and technology resources were previewed. In my visits to different groups I felt a positive energy that I hope will translate to an enthusiastic start for students.

Today has been our "Day of Technology" with a number of topic-driven sessions and open labs to allow teachers to work with Data Director, School Loop, and other technology tools. The Special Education team held a group meeting that was very well-attended.
